Energy Efficiency Tips For College Students

Speaking as a graduate student who has been living on her own since March, I try every possible way to be energy efficient in order to help conserve our planet as well as help my wallet! At this day and age it seems like being energy efficient is a fad or trend but it should be looked as a way of life that is here to stay. There are many resources available for people to become educated and aware of the problems that are ongoing and finding ways of fixing them. It is up to us to practice energy efficiency in order to protect the environment and save some money while were at it.

When picking a location to live for college, opt to get a place closest to campus or on campus. This way you can walk or ride a bike to class instead of driving to school. My university is a commuter school and because of that they have made a go green ride incentive where students are grouped together depending on where they live and receive better parking if they decide to carpool. Although this is not the most popular option, more and more students are turning to it. Even in my cohort, students have posted on our message board if anyone wishes to carpool. This is something that has yet to be fully developed but it is on its way.

In the community where I live, I know that we can ask for a free air filter every month. Although replacing the filter monthly does create extra trash, the air conditioner will be able to run more efficiently with a cleaner air filter. Ideally buying a reusable air filter that is replaced once a month is the best solution, but for houses or apartment complexes that dont offer free air filters, the air conditioning will work more efficiently if the filter is replaced.

Since my days as a graduate student consist of going to class and then studying and reading, I tend to come home some days to have lunch or just do some work at my apartment instead of on campus. I have learned to open the blinds and let the sun shine in. Never will there be sunlight outside and light on in my apartment unless there is a storm or it is gloomy. The lights only go on when the sun sets. Reading and writing may be done near a window or even outside, whichever is your preference. In this manner, I end up saving half of what I would probably be using in electricity.

If you are living in a dorm room with a roommate and have separate TVs and/or refrigerators, attempt to consolidate and invest in one refrigerator. Label each of your items so that they are not confused and locate it in a common area for both of you to have access. Same goes with the television. From what I remember in college I hardly got to watch TV and one was definitely enough for me so there is no need to have a TV in each room. Again, use whichever TV and locate it in the common area so that both you and your roommate may enjoy it, as well as any guests you may have over.

One of the things that is a bit annoying about going away for college and living in an apartment is the fact that youre usually only there for a couple semesters out of the entire year. Some students opt to stay during the summer while others return home for a break. Luckily there is a plan offered by the Texas electricity company, Bounce Energy, called Nifty 9 which allows the customer to lock in a fixed rate for 9 months. This is ideal for those who are also living in an apartment while away at school for 9 months out of the year. With the Nifty 9, Bounce Energy also plan makes sure to also reward its customers. When you pay your bill on time you receive benefits such as bill credits, movie tickets, companion airfare, and a free electricity bill!

Whether it is through Bounce Energy or any other company, look into the plans and contracts that are offered to see which is most efficient for you and your situation. This research is sure to be homework that will definitely benefit you in the future!

Different types of furniture that you can purchase for your house must match your taste and pocket both. If you opt for the unfinished type of furniture, pine takes well to stenciling and other creative endeavours. Pine can always be stripped and refinished, which is much easier than it sounds compared with other woods like oak furniture.

Consider getting custom made furniture which can give very unique designs rather than mass produced furniture. Enjoy all these benefits of furniture made from the affordable and elegant pine wood today. The type of wood chosen for furniture will determine how strong the furniture is, how long it lasts and hence the quality make a huge difference. As such you should weigh your current and future needs when shopping for this furniture. Smart Tips To Successfully Add Nursery Space In Your Master Bedroom

To successfully help you create a nursery space in your master bedroom, choose furniture which can be used in many ways, utilize a white noise machine to hush noises, coordinate the infant’s decor with your own room, coordinate your baby decors and furniture colors with your master bedroom, and separate the nursery and master bedroom with dividers or floor mats.
Having a new baby in the family requires some adjustments at home. Putting up an extra space in your master bedroom and turning it into a nursery area is a wise thing to do especially when you have limited rooms at home. The following tips will help you create a nursery space in your master bedroom which is convenient for you and your baby:
Choose furniture which can be used in many ways
Furniture that serves more than one purpose, will give you more room. You can opt for a changing table that has drawers and the crib which has shelves so that it will take less space. Other space-saving furniture includes cribs with detachable compartments and clip-on organizers. Besides saving valuable space, everything your infant needs is within arm’s reach and is well-organized.
Use a white noise machine to drown out other noise
Unlike in a nursery room that is exclusive for your baby, there are other noises in your room that could make it uncomfortable for baby to rest, sleep, or play. Your baby might be disturbed by the noise of the TV, radio, and conversations between you and your spouse. To drown out other noise in your room, use a Sound machine and make baby’s space in the room more conducive and soothing, especially at night.
Select infant furnishings that go with the overall feel of your room
To make your room aesthetically pleasing, you can coordinate your nursery space with the existing theme in your room. For example, if you have leaf designs on your wall paper, you can choose a garden theme for your nursery space. You could decorate with pictures of the sun, trees, colorful flowers, a green meadow, and even a rainbow to match the baby’s space with yours.
Harmonize the colors of your baby dcor and furniture with your master bedroom
It is not necessary to paint the entire room with shades of pink or blue. The main point here is to select infant furniture that matches whatever you already own. It will be much more pleasing to the eyes this way.
Use a divider or a floor mat to separate the spaces
If you want to put distinction between your space and the nursery space, you can put a divider in your room or set up a floor mat on the nursery space. It may not be required, but separating your area from the baby’s space with these dividers can help both you and your baby feel being inside another room the moment you step in and out the nursery area.
You don’t have to trouble yourself nor pay too much on this simple, but beautiful, project at home. It just takes some creativity and imagination to successfully include a nursery area in your master bedroom and save some space at the same time.

Bank Design Trends Focus On Customers, Marketing, Brands

The business of banking has evolved over the past several decades, from institutions largely limited to making loans and taking deposits, to financial supermarkets that offer a range of banking, investment and insurance products. Not surprisingly, as banks began to serve customers in new ways, they also changed in appearance. Today, trends in bank design support a hotly competitive, retail-oriented industry with a focus on customer-friendly environments, cost-efficient operations and brand-driven design elements.

New design and construction elements demonstrate bank security
Today many banks are choosing to forego a thick brick and mortar style and teller cages that hold customers at arms length, for buildings designed to be accessible, efficient and customer-friendly. Even traditional bank facades, which may be favored by an older, more conservative customer base, can be designed with contemporary, innovative and green building materials that create inviting, but secure environments.

Cost-efficient, environmentally sound bank design a genuine asset
Because banks are businesses and must deliver a return to investors, cost- efficiency in design is a growing strategic necessity. With the price of traditional construction materials on the rise, new solutions such as pre-engineered systems and exterior building facades, modular interior design elements and other construction efficiencies save on costs and maintenance.

Marketing-focused design draws customers to new products, services
Competition within the financial services industry has shaped the objectives of bank design today: Bring customers in the door, and engage them in the retail-oriented environment. Dynamic way-finding signage directs customers to financial products and services, while minimizing confusion and lines. Kiosks and video displays deliver marketing and educational materials and messages.
Modular furniture and space dividers help ensure customer privacy and personal attention.

Branch bank design spotlights corporate branding
Walk into a branch of most large commercial banks and youll be surrounded by representations of that corporations brand. Customers expect to see the faade, logo, colors, interior dcor, products and other elements of corporate sameness, and banks depend on that familiarity to build brand loyalty. And while freestanding branches prevail, more national and regional banks are favoring modular or in-store financial centers to sharpen their retail-oriented competitive edge.

Smaller banks opt for design that reflects local community, culture
In creating their own brands, many independent banks draw from the communities they serve for customized design themes that help build long-term customer relationships. Geography and community culture often drive bank faade and interior decor choices. Options include a maritime theme for a bank that serves a costal community, or a welcoming lodge design that complements a mountain or outdoor recreation location. Some banks also have drawn theme elements from a customer base that shares a strong cultural heritage.

Bank design that reflects customer demographics
Today progressive banks are using design elements to identify and leverage customer differences. Banks that serve high numbers of young families may add a play area for the children of busy parents. Another institution with a customer base of seniors may offer amenities that appeal to the social needs of that demographic group, including TV screens, newspapers, coffee, comfortable seating and meeting areas. Professional and business customers, for whom time is a key issue, may value streamlined interior design that helps shorten lines, speed transactions, segment merchant and customer business and identify products and services.

Baby Milestones – Pulling Themselves Up

If you are a first time parent, you will be excited for each developmental milestone in your babys life. You might be familiar with common developmental stages like smiling, crawling, and walking, but your baby doesnt stop at that. Although, all babies do not develop at the same pace, they are always learning and constantly pulling themselves up the milestone ladder. Therefore it is important that you understand and appreciate the different developmental stages your baby goes through.

When your baby is around four months old you will notice him trying to roll on his side or even on to his back without your help. It will start accidentally. Maybe your baby got to kicking and moving around and next thing he realizes this leads to a roll over on his tummy. This is the time to start watching your baby more closely. He may not be strong enough to immediately move his head or he could fall sound asleep tired of the big effort. Always make sure that his head is not buried under pillows and blankets and he is able to breathe. Rolling over is the first step to babies pulling themselves up.

After your baby has mastered the rolling over and gained enough confidence, he will progress to pushing himself upon his arms. He will be rocking back and forth on his knees and he will love it! Your baby will be fascinated with his arms and feet savoring his new freedom to touch and explore the world around him. The longer your baby can do this, the stronger he will become. Building up muscle and gaining more confidence will move him one step closer to pulling himself up!

Between six and seven months of age your baby will be able to sit and possibly will be experimenting with crawling. Thats when he will start trying to reach and grab on to the crib or playpen not only to touch but in an attempt to pull himself up.

Once your baby masters crawling and starts moving around with confidence he will make every attempt there is to try to grab anything within his reach and pull himself up to a standing position. Some babies need a bit of support; others do it entirely on their own. At this time your babys muscles are strong enough and he will be able to bear weight on his legs even if at the beginning its for a short time only. According to pediatricians, pulling up usually happens between 8 and 10 months of age. Often parents forget that pulling up and standing should be followed by sitting down and that babies do not know how to sit down on their own. They have to learn how to do that too, so give them a helping hand.

Household furniture is the most common aid babies use for pulling up coffee tables, TV stands, chairs, big flower pots, bookshelves, etc. Unfortunately babies cannot foresee that a clash with one of these might lead not only to bumps and bruises but even to more serious injuries. All the furniture that is not sturdy enough to support the babys weight and might topple down should be moved away, glass and metal objects are especially baby unfriendly. Soften the sharp edges of coffee and end tables with towels, remove coasters from all furniture.

Pulling up is a prerequisite to walking and babies need to have gained enough strength and balance to accomplish it. The milestone given here is a general guideline. Your baby will develop at its own speed and pace; love and encourage him and enjoy this memorable time!

Tips to Cut Down your Electricity Bill

Need to cut down on your home wasted expenses and economize more money? As an online LED lighting store in Australia, we will give you some tips to start saving on electricity. Many small details can be fixed to minimize your electricity bill, all you have to do is to change some of your habits. The following tips dont only let you save money, but also protect the environment:

Replace incandescent and halogen light bulbs with energy saving LED light bulbs: For the time being, the most common type of lights used to save energy is the fluorescent light bulb. Lately, LED light bulbs have started to pick up too; they are up to ten times more effective than fluorescent lights, and way more energy efficient than the conventional lights. Whereas, conventional lighting – like incandescent and halogen lights- contains mercury and other toxic substances, LED lights are made of non-toxic materials which make them 100% recyclable and harmless for the environment. So, go to the nearest LED lighting store or order them online to replace all your ceiling lights and bathroom lights with LED lighting products to save energy.

Prevent power loss by switching off power points when electronics are not being used: plugged electronics, even when turned off, keep on consuming energy without your knowledge. For example, up to 30% of power used by TV is consumed when it is turned off. Therefore, to prevent losing energy and money, better to unplug it from the electricity outlet when not in use. Even when using LED lighting, which is the most efficient lighting solution, make sure the lights are off during the day and every time you exit a room at night.

Turn non-essential electricity off when on holidays or away: This tip is close to the previous one, but on a larger scale. When you are on holidays or out of town for business or on any other occasion, many electronic devices are not essential to keep turned on, so unplug them. The only thing you can actually leave plugged is the refrigerator, but only if its full of stocked food.

Make the most out of only one LED light bulb per room: on many occasions, we can see a room with many light bulbs to optimize the lighting experience. However, each room needs only one LED light bulb to fully illuminate it, depending on the light output of each bulb. The latter notion is called lumens/watt, which tells you how efficient the LED light bulb is. On the other hand, several bulbs in one room mean a bigger consumption of energy. Heres a trick on how to maximize your lighting using only one LED globe or LED spotlight: paint your walls with white colors this color reflects the light from the LED light fixtures more than any other color causing a better brightness.

Those were some of the many other things each and every one of us could and should apply at home to save on electrical energy and contribute in protecting the environment. Replacing the conventional lights with saving energy LED light bulbs and switching off non-used electronics can make you save on your electricity bill. So act fast, save energy, save your money and protect the environment.
