Roof Shingles Prices – Take Out the Guess Work

Spring is the season for roofing and most of the building supply houses will have sales weekly that offer roofing supplies. Depending on what product you will need the prices can be relatively small to several hundred dollars. Roofing products are pretty versatile and can range from peel and stick roofing shingles to steep roof pitches that come in a roll, asphalt, wood shake, lamented and steel. Steel shingles can even be shaped to resemble wood shake. Steel shingles cost around $58.00 a bundle and three bundles cover 100 square feet.

The most common roofing shingle is an asphalt shingle and they can come in various sizes and tabs. Corning offers a three tab roofing one. A collection of asphalt shingles is normally between $15.49 to $60.00 a bundle depending on the warranty the company offers. Corning even offers an asphalt shingle called the Heritage that is a three tab asphalt tile that gives the illusion of wood shake and is available in various colors to match the exterior of the home’s siding and trim. The Heritage shingle can normally withstand 130 mph and a three bundles should cover 98.4 square feet.

Shake is probably the oldest form of shingle still sold in the United States. Wood shake comes in two sizes, medium and large. The medium wood shake measures 18″ by 7 1/2″ and a bundle normally covers 15′ and costs around $22.00 a bundle depending on the home building store pricing. The large wood shake is 24″ by 10″ and a bundle normally covers 20′ and costs around $35.00 a bundle. Wood shake is also available to complete the hip and ridge of the roof. A bundle cost around $43.00 and covers sixteen linear feet.

A new type of shingle that has recently gained popularity is the laminated asphalt shingle. The laminated asphalt shingle has a 53 year warranty, is algae resistant and is said to withstand winds up to 80 mph. They are reported in the advertisement to be so cheap that the bundle price could not even be listed in the advertisement. The home building stores want you to call or come in for pricing as they feel the they were to low to place in their company ads. These laminated shingles are said to be part of the new green movement and are environmentally friendly. Three bundles weigh 235 lbs and cover 100 square feet.

Cedar Roof Shingles

If you’re considering putting a new roof on or changing your existing one, then one of your considerations should be cedar roof shingles.

There are a number of advantages to using this type of roof material. Number one is that it is very distinctive and looks really good. Cedar shingles will complement many different architectural designs. They have a clear rustic look that is appealing to many people.

Besides the looks though there are several other advantages to using cedar shingles. There will be less risk of any damage if it is nailed and installed properly and they won’t be as likely to split or shrink, leaving replacement at a minimum.

Make sure you choose cedar roof shingles that have been treated by the manufacturer with fire-resistant chemicals. This provides more safety to your home and family than untreated wood shingles.

Continuing the theme of the importance of sustainable gardens, here we will discuss what are known as Green Roofs, the different types available and why they have become such an integral part of modern horticultural planning.

As one can ascertain from the name, the basic premise of a Green Roof is to bring plant matter, and therefore greenery, to our otherwise barren rooftops and thereby take best advantage of the dead spaces in and around our gardens, in order to better support our fast degrading environment.

Due to the nature of photosynthesis, Green Roofs are characteristically easy to establish and maintain because, by their very design, they are in the optimum position for the reception of sunlight and rainwater. The concept is not new ancient dwellings often used turf as a roofing material, but, in modern times, the Green Roof concept has once again been implemented in many commercial and architectural sectors, not to mention the broad following it has in the residential market. Rolls-Royces factory in West Sussex has one of the largest, commercial green roofs in Europe, covering over 32,000m2, and the green roofing project at the Ethelred Estate in London is another good example of the concept being taken more seriously.

The ecological ramifications of projects like these are self-explanatory, more green biomass equates to an increase in the conversion of CO2 to oxygen through photosynthesis, not to mention the purification of air borne moisture that comes into contact with the site. However, there are also great financial gains to made, which are probably best exemplified by the US Postal Distribution building in New York City which saves over $30,000 a year in heating and cooling. The project itself is designed to sustain itself for 50 years, which suggests a total of $1,500,000!

However, were getting ahead of ourselves – very few of us have the space and resources to oversee a project of such scale but, lest we forget, this is effectively an act of charity toward mother nature, and all charity begins at home.

Before you embark on a Green Roof project, it is imperative you check whether youll require planning permission to do so, and what regulation youll have to abide by. However, it is unlikely that youll be bound by many restrictions, as the state encourages their ecological benefits, particularly the green corridor it will provide for local wildlife. Regulations aside, the Green Roofs domestic applications are copious, including a cheap and sustainable form of insulation and greater control over storm water runoff. Research by the Centre for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge has found that “a layer of vegetation can reduce heat loss from buildings, cutting the wind chill factor by 75% and heating demand by 25%”, and the variety of plants you can grow are many – providing colourful coverings for otherwise boring, plain, or ugly roofs.

There are three categories of roof garden: extensive, semi-extensive and intensive. These are defined primarily by the depth requirement of their soil, thus dictating which plants are suited to each.

Extensive Green Roofs

Extensive category green roofs are characterized by their primarily artificial soil combinations that normally integrate materials such as perlite, rockwall, sand and concrete and, as such, they are best designated to drought resistant plants that are in need of good drainage rather than regular moisture. The planting medium is ordinarily supplemented by a filter layer, drainage layer, root barrier membrane and insulation and waterproofing respectively. Readymade Sedum mats enriched with substrate are a good choice for this environment. The planting medium itself should be no fewer than 2 inches deep.

Semi-extensive Green Roofs

The semi-extensive project needs a slightly deeper growing field (4-8 inches) as it should be able to support small perennial plants, though not the beds, trees and shrubs of the intensive green roof. Good plants to try here would be Knautia macedonica, Centaurea scabiosa and Origanum vulgare. As with the extensive roof, you will require all the standard drainage and waterproofing faculties that underpin the soil structure. A semi-extensive roof can take anywhere between twelve and eighteen months to establish and will require regular maintenance, particularly if it is situated at an unorthodox angle or position in relation to the sun. Regular weeding, watering and feeding are all a must, and even then you might find some areas may fail.

Intensive Green Roofs

An intensive Green Roof is that type which is most reminiscent of orthodox gardening, as it is often structured around three dimensions, including raised beds and box crops, and with a much wider range of suitable plants. However, these can only be supported by a richly organic growing medium and plenty of depth to become established – usually around 12 inches. It is important when constructing these raised beds that you use lightweight materials to ensure that the roof itself can support them. There are many other tricks that can be utilized to reduce the weight of the roof garden, such as the bulking out of compost with perlite, and using polystyrene rather than broken pots to crock the bottom of planters being used. However, as we know, the lighter the compost the less sturdy it acts as a plant anchor and pots and planters can easily fall over, but you can overcome this issue with clever placement of plant supports, such as wires and staking.

Pneumatic nailers and staplers are among the most dangerous construction tools used on jobsites, and can cause serious injuries to both the operator and workers nearby if used improperly. All workers should receive proper training on these tools, including instructions about compressor settings, hose connections, and fastening procedures, before being allowed to use them. And all equipment should be checked before use, carefully maintained, and removed from service if there is any question about its safe functioning.

Here is a “Code of Safe Practices” that every employer should review with workers that use pneumatic tools.

Before You Start

* Only allow experienced, trained, and authorized workers to operate pneumatic nailers and staplers.
* Always wear safety glasses.
* Use hearing protection if working with noisy tools or in a restricted space.
* Inspect tools before connecting them to the air supply.
* Check that all tool mechanisms are attached.
* Tighten all screws securely.
* Ensure that all guards are in place.
* Check compressor and pressure settings before connecting tools.
* Check that tools are correctly and securely connected to the air supply hose, and that hoses are in good shape.
* Always handle a tool as if it’s loaded with fasteners (nails, staples, etc.).
* Disconnect tools from the air supply during cleaning or adjustment. Before clearing any blockage or misfire, be sure that depressing the trigger empties all air and releases all pressure from the tool.
* Only use fasteners recommended by the manufacturer.
* Only permit properly trained people or manufacturers to carry out tool maintenance and service.
* Disconnect tools if left unattended. OSHA requires workers to stay within 25 feet of unattended tools, or disconnect them if farther away.

Coil roofing nailer ..a review

Coil roofing nailers are the most abused tools on my jobsite. They withstand blistering rooftop heat under summer sun, take two-story high-dives onto frozen mud in winter, and endure constant grinding as I drag them across 10-grit shingle granules. And that doesnt even account for the grime that builds up inside and outside the tools from working in this merciless environment. So, to say roofing nailers have a tough job is an understatement.
Test Criteria

I field-tested 11 nailersthe Bostitch RN46, Craftsman 18180, DeWalt D51321, Hitachi NV45AB2, Makita AN451, Max CN450R, Paslode 3175-RCU, Porter-Cable RN175A, Ridgid R175RNA, Senco 455XP, and Spotnails VRN45putting them through their turns fastening heavy laminated (aka architectural or dimensional) shingles in cold and moderate weather conditions. While I looked at operational functions (power and recoil, depth-of-drive adjustments, driver blades, and exposure gauges) and ergonomic and durability features (reloading nails, handling, and wear guards), it was power, recoil, and speed that mattered most. At the beginning, middle, and end of the day, I need a nailer that skips across shingles with minimal recoil and flush-drives every nailevery time.
The Driving Force

Power and Recoil. I dont have the gear to objectively test a nailers driving power, so I gauge it with my hammerthe more I have to take my hammer out of my loop to pound down proud heads, the more air pressure I know a nailer needs. Since all the tools in the test specify a pressure operating range of 80120 psi, I set my compressor with an output regulator to 100 psi. I then ran the tank at 110130 for constant air output, which leveled the playing field for all the nailers. Most of my roofs are sheathed with 5/8-inch AdvanTechan exceptionally dense productand I typically install 35-year or better laminated shingles. Like most roofers, I position the shingles and bounce-nail across each course. My speed is greatly influenced by how fast a nailer cycles and how little recoil it has. To maintain top speed, I want little or no recoil so the tool skips across the surface rather than jumping after every nail.

The Max, Hitachi, Senco, DeWalt, Spotnails, Porter-Cable, and Bostitch all drove nails consistently with little recoil. The Makita and Ridgid were noticeably less powerful with medium recoil, leaving occasional proud nail heads. The Craftsman and Paslode needed more power for my roofs. Even with the depth-of-drive dialed to the max and the compressor regulated at 100 psi, the Craftsman couldnt set all the nails on a full row of shingles and the recoil was too strong while bump-nailing. The Paslode recoiled a little less but was also underpowered, and without a depth adjustment there was no way to increase drive depth to compensate.

Drivers. Drivers are among the most expensive replacement parts on a roofing nailer, and as they wear down nail heads dont set flat. The good news is that you can grind a driver two or three times before it becomes too short and needs replacing.

Roofing varies state to state, not just in installation traditions but in color and styles available.In the Dallas area there are several roofing factories. GAF, Tamko, Atlas, Certainteed, Tamko, all have a presence here with GAF having two factories, one the old Elk plant.

If you go to any of the manufacturer sites you’ll see a zip code selector for colors and, of course, contractors. GAF, for example shows a WeatherMax and Marquis but in my 31 years as a contractor and eight years as an installer before that, I’ve never seen them. One of my new sale techs sold some once and all hell broke out. We fixed it by, as my father says, passing it on to the consumer through reduced profits. I’m not really sure I fully fathom that anything was passed on.

A few years ago a client wanted exactly what he had on his roof. I knew it was a Tamko Heritage weathered wood and place the order. When he rounded the bend and looked down the hill he saw his roof darker than all the neighbors. I thought the manufacturer had changed the granule drop. I called Spec Roofing Supply and they told me they brought in product from Kansas City and it was darker. Never knew it. Never guessed it. Did my job, I thought, and now was in a pickle. The man was selling his house and was sure that it wouldn’t sell because it was different. So we sold all the neighbors roofs, as it had hailed in Coppell, and we put on the entire rainbow. The angry client was confused but he paid me about six months later.

In 1995 a lot of roofing was brought in from around the country from manufacturers that most roofers had never heard of or seen. These air nailing carpetbaggers did terrible jobs and now the roofing can’t be matched.
Besides having different colors and styles, roofing manufacturers have different drops, color mixtures with the same name, and even variations within the same plant due to the texture of the asphalt, temperature at application, or different pressures applied from different machines. This variation in pressure can influence how the roofing reflects light.
Then after all this comes the discontinuation of colors, the changing of the shapes and sizes and warranties.

GAF had the Timberline that started as an organic productwith a 25 year warranty. It went glass about 1980 and went to 30 years. When Elk put out the Prestique II 25 year product, GAF answered with a 25 year Woodline. Then it became a Woodline Plus, then Timberline 25. Atlas kept messing with the warranty and added 5 years to theirs making it a 35 year instead of a 30. Then everybody else changed their 25, 30, and 40 year products to 30, 40, and 50 years respectively. Then the 50 became lifetime.

GAF bought Elk, dropped most of its own colors and ran with the Elk ones.
Now you have a home in Dallas with a 30 year Timberline put on in the 1990’s and the insurance wants to pay you for a 30 year but you really have a 40 year.
The color doesn’t match and fading is not the reason. The length and width of the product don’t match and Allstate doesn’t care because the policies have exclusions. You know you should have read that policy.
Owens Corning calls its Weathered Wood by the name Driftwood and if you’re new to the business and use generic terms the supply house will send you a different color than you want.
All the manufacturers use the term “slate” to refer to a bluish hue don’t they. Yes, all but one. When ordering Tamko the term slate means dark brown.
Cedar means sand color, black is black, but slate and weathered wood can get you a mad client.
Dallas has seen a lot of materials come and go. The dance is endless. Now you have GAF products that you can get specialty ridges for in all the colors or some of the colors in some of the ridge styles, or they have their own particular ridge.
Some roofers cross brand manufacturers ridge and field product because they want to use a cheap 20 year ridge on their class IV lifetime roof.
We lost a roof to a janitor last December. We proposed using Armorshield II lifetime with a heavy ridge and Shinglemate felt. The job was to be hand nailed and everything on the roof was to be new. New stacks, new valleys, StormGuard on the penetrations… and everything.
The janitor used no felt, used 20 year class nothing for ridge and starter, replaced no pipes, metal edge, and put in no valley material. Then he shot it on with pistols.
It doesn’t matter, this house on Silverlake Rd in McKinney,75070, is for sale.
If the buyers inspector looks under the starter he might be able to tell the felt is the original but I doubt it. The problem will come when the roof gets older and has wind or hail damage. I’m sure the roofer, er, janitor, said “we used the old felt.”
Let’s get this straight:YOU CAN NOT REUSE FELT. Those word do not compute. The felt is mute. It is full of holes and does not meet the criteria for a subroof.
The worst part is the guy doesn’t even know he did a bad job because he’s not really in the business. He has no certifications, no formal training, no real understanding of what “system” means when referring to a roof system. Otherwise he would have put down at least 15 lb felt.
This example show that Certainteed makes 20 year three tabs, that he used for ridge, that match their 50 year class IV roofing. Most manufacturers take care to keep this from happening.
Since Jon Wright Roofing started in 1979 nothing is the same. Nothing.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Built-Up Roofing Systems

Generally, roofs with slants and inclines are favored by most residential and commercial residences. Their natural ability to dispose of rain and snow without having to install substantial amounts of insulation has made them an effective and affordable option.

A built-up roof is an integument made up of alternating layers of tar and asphalt materials. They have been used in the U.S. for almost a century and are usually referred to as tar and gravel roofs, as these are some of the primary materials used in its construction.

Built-up roofing takes coal tar-saturated cotton fabrics and gravel-like materials, like asphalt, to assemble alternating layers of bitumen (tar) and roofing felts or ply sheets directly over the roof decks and insulation. The tar is used to soak into the roofing felt and durably hold all the elements together.

Built-up roofing has been around since the 1840s as a reliable option that was readily available for installing new roofs. All it requires is three essential components: a waterproofing component, a reinforcing component and a surfacing component. Most roofs apply variations of these components to create more durable, waterproof roofs. Some even apply 10 ply sheets to one roof! This helps ensure the roof against potential leaking from entering the home while creating a stable platform for any solar panels or roof gardens installed on the roof.

Built-up roofs are very dependable and work great for many reasons, however, they do have some drawbacks. The maintenance of the roof seems to be the primary concern. Built-up roofs are built flat and as one so when a leak occurs it can be difficult to place the location of it, causing one to have to dismantle the entire roof. 1. In order to avoid major damage, maintenance must take place on the roofing system regularly. Re-asphalting the layers is usually not necessary if the roofing surface is properly cared for. This would include draining the rain that forms on the roof after storms and remodeling the top layer with reflective materials to prevent heat damage.

However, because built-up roofs are flat the task of removing layers are much easier. It also creates flexibility in terms of what you can add to your roofing space, should you so desire. Roofing gardens and solar panels are much more easy to install on flat roofs than traditional sloped rooftops.

Then benefits of this type of roof are great, however, the drawbacks are something to consider. Keep in mind that these roofs require a bit of maintenance and labor, the larger the roof the greater the responsibility for upkeep. If your ultimate goal is to save money, this option would be the most cost-effective.

Should You Do the Work yourself?

Roofing work should never be done by yourself, unless you are a trained professional. Roofers know the local construction laws and are trained to get their work done with those in mind. You should never climb up onto a roof and try to repair or fix anything.
